Marcel Wehn´s documentary film follows Wim Wenders’ story and forms a link between his work and his early biography. It focuses on the director’s life up until his move to the USA following his international breakthrough with ‘The American Friend’.
‘I am my story’ answers Kamikaze when asked ‘Who are you?’ in Wim Wenders’ film ‘Kings of the Road.’ In frank and very personal interviews, Wim Wenders talks about his protected childhood home in post-war Oberhausen. We join him on a journey into the past that takes us to Paris, where he began as a young painter and then decided to become a film-maker. He retells his experiences, successes and failures as a film student in Munich on his way to becoming a director. Through his accounts we get a picture of his life and the enthusiasm felt amongst the first film students of the University of Film and Television in Munich.
Alongside Wenders himself, we encounter some of the people who were most important to him; including, Peter Handke, Robby Mueller, Ruediger Vogler, Bruno Ganz and Lisa Kreuzer. In their accounts and recollections, they discuss the recurrent themes in Wenders’ work: The search for identity, loneliness, friendship and communication. They also recall personal experiences in their private and professional relationships with Wenders. Viewing these accounts in connection with clips from his earliest films, we begin to see that Wenders’ work often related to authentic experiences and the people he encountered. This documentary throws a completely new light on Wenders’ early films.
