A humorous observation of citizens’ protest, counter protest, politics, media and background of the controversial reconstruction of Stuttgart’s main train station.
An unexpected revolutionary wind is blowing in Stuttgart, city of vines and Mercedes-Benz. Swabians of all ages and backgrounds unite in protest against the “new heart of Europe”, as planners call the controversial projected reconstruction of the main train station, underground. At first the protests resembled a peaceful summer gathering. But this changed rapidly after so called “Black Thursday”, when the police brutally overrode a peaceful demonstration by school children on the 30th of September 2010. Several protesters were injured, one of them lost his eyesight. The protests against „Stuttgart 21“ have become a major news topic.
Stuttgart filmmakers “Böller & Brot” have followed the events from “Black Thursday” until the state elections in March 2011 with sympathy and some humorous distance. They delved into protests and counter-protests making astounding experiences like being hit by a water cannon, and learnt just how fast chestnuts can resemble bullets or how to professionally build blockades. They witnessed Heiner Geissler, the mediator come and go, a tent city grow in the city park , a construction work fence being moved to a museum, and finally the historical election victory of the Green Party.
But life is not a movie, the battle continues…
