Behind the barred windows of the deportation prison “Rottenburg” there are 45 men, the majority of who never committed a crime. Detained here are primarily illegal immigrants and rejected asylum seekers who failed to leave Germany within their assigned deadline. For every day in prison, the inmate is charged 70 Euros.

The film accompanies six prisoners during their last weeks before deportation: for instance, the young Turk Sedat who dreams of getting married to his girlfriend, and the Kurd Kemal who is prepared to risk his own life to prevent his deportation.
Without painting the situation black and white, director Sarah Moll follows the fate of the young immigrants whose dreams seem futile while also presenting the views of the people in charge of deporting the inmates. The Film “The Unwanted” tells its story with intense images somewhere between hope and fear.
